Capsule Geology

Much of the Tom 2 area is underlain pyroclastic and sedimentary units. On the ridges east of Tom Creek andesitic tuff is noted. On the west side of the claim group, in the "Hematite Ridge" area, a stratigraphically and structurally complex package of andesitic to rhyolitic tuffs, tuffaceous wackes, conglomerates and limestone occurs. The crest of "Hematite Ridge" is characterized by sediments while volcanic rocks are more abundant on the southeast facing slope. Rhyolites have been identified near the east end of the ridge top. Government geological compilation (MapPlace) indicates a complex stratigraphy comprising the Upper Triassic Stuhini Group, Upper Paleozoic Stikine Assemblage and Lower Jurassic and Middle Jurassic Hazelton rocks. Early Jurassic monzodiorite to gabbro of the Lehto plutonics intrudes the strata.

Pyrite is characteristically disseminated throughout the fault-related quartz-sericite alteration zone on Hematite Ridge. Locally, there are fracture-controlled concentrations of up to 2 per cent disseminated chalcopyrite up to a meter wide. Samples of this material contained 0.25 and 0.9 per cent copper, with 2.44 and 1.32 per cent zinc (Samples 26233 and 26234, Figure 4, Assessment Report 21963). None contained significant precious metals.

WORK HISTORY

The Tom property was staked in 1988. The first recorded work on the property is that described by Nicholson (Assessment Report 19640) for Ecstall Mining Corp and Omega. Old shovels and lumber on the property, suggesting some work was carried out previously.

In 1989, owners Ecstall Mining and Omega Gold carried out a preliminary program which consisted of a geological examination, rock geochemistry and stream sediment geochemistry (Assessment Report 19640).

In 1990, Santa Marina Gold Ltd had a limited work program conducted that consisted of prospecting, reconnaissance mapping, silt (15) and rock (19) sampling in 1990 (Assessment Report 20804)).

In 1991, Ecstall Mining Corp carried out a three-day program to provide a geological assessment of the overall exploration potential of the property (Assessment Report 21963). Most of the property, some 1575 hectares, was covered on foot at a reconnaissance level. Thirty-four rock chip samples were collected and analyzed for copper, lead, zinc, silver and gold as well as varying combinations of other elements.

In 1992, Kennecott Canada Inc collected soil samples at 50 meter intervals across the area interpreted to be the zone of alteration, and two rock samples, taken of a felsic unit encountered in outcrop, were submitted for whole rock analyses (Assessment Report 22572). The Tom claims were owned by Ecstall Mining Corp.

In 2020, Eskay Mining Corp. completed a program of prospecting, rock sampling, ground and airborne geophysical surveys and 4335 metres of diamond drilling in 20 holes on the area as part of the Sib-Corey-North Mitchell property. The geophysical surveys consisted of a 911.7 line-kilometre airborne electromagnetic survey, a 55.85 line-kilometre induced polarization survey and a 43.19 line-kilometre magnetotelluric survey. Drilling was performed on the TV (MINFILE 104B 385) and Jeff (MINFILE 104B 525) occurrences.
